Something new I learned through PR

Out of all the things I learned in my PR experience at Loyalist so far, I think the biggest for me personally has been learning event planning and organization.

I'm generally a horrible procrastinator and having so many real life situations to work on I feel has made me a better person even though I'm still working on the procrastination aspect.

The first big thing that really got me going in the early days was the United Way Sale.  It was a great example of team building and teamwork as we came together and learned how to operate as a unit.  Out of everything we've done this year that;s still my favorite.

This second semester has been stressful due to the large amount of separate group projects.  However I feel like the United Way experience as well as learning about general event planning has been a huge help.  I hope these experience help improve projects for the Legion, Film Night, Hastings County and more to help plan things out in an orderly manner.

Mission, Vision, Value

Mission

To gain skills and abilities to become a functioning member of the PR community.  To use my experiences to learn and grow as an individual.

Vision

To be able to sustain myself and any future family I might have.  To above all have a happy life.

Value

To preserve happiness and improve quality of life for myself and others.

Anything PR

A very recent story  in PR is Austin Texas based firm StrangeFruit PR.  The hospitality focused firm recently came under fire for the companies name.  In typical PR disaster fashion, the ladies responsible for the company failed to do their research.  The name Strange Fruit is actually the name of a song from 30's jazz musician Billie Holiday protesting lynchings.  After a ton of backlash, including arguing with people on twitter, the company shut down all social networking.  As stated, research is key before doing anything.

Great CSR Report

When I searched for CSR reports I instantly found my idea.  Telus has a CSR report that matches their colorful advertising that people have loved for so long.  It features the animals from the commercials and colorful diagrams and pictures to a very clear picture of what the company is all about that's very user friendly.

Great Brand Journalisim

A really good example of brand journalism is Red Bull and the gravity jump preformed by Felix Baumgartner.  When the Australian skydiver made his now famous 2012 jump, Red Bull had it's branding all over the place throughout the event on social media their own website, TV and more.  This got Red Bulls name out in full force for something that very easily became popular.

Online Media Kit

I went through several examples of media kits online.  After noting that several of them were very hard to find on certain websites, I eventually settled on the good, but simple model used by the Toronto Star on their website.  Unlike several of the models I looked at this was easy to find right away.  It has colour in it and has the information.  Above all I was swayed by the aforementioned fact that the Toronto Star made theirs easy to find and accessible.

Internal Communications

On Tuesday September 30 we had an in class discussion about companies with good internal communication.  Although we went over several, we barely scratched the surface.

One company that has good internal communication is Nokia.  With social media becoming huge, Nokia started it's own social media division in 2008.  The goal was to improve communications throughout the company and to get Nokia's employees engaged.  Other purposes of Nokia's expanding social media since 2008 have been to get their 125,000 employees to learn about new products form the company and to receive feedback on any potential issues.

Another company with good internal communication is London Drugs, a western Canada pharmacy/department store chain.  I noticed that their practises were good while working for the company before attending school.  Information was provided through e-mail, social media, and through regular meetings.  Although not all the info was useful for a basic employee, the company still tried to give as much info as possible.  This is an example of good, if a bit excessive, internal communications.
